VICENZA
This very old city of the Veneto region, founded in the pre-Roman era by the Euganeans, holds evidences of its very long history. Presently, Vicenza distinguishes itself as a centre of primary importance in the national economic productive sphere. It is also a place of numerous industrial and artisan activities and its goldsmith, mechanical, textile and leather manufacturings are particularly renowned. The old part of the city (together with its minor centres and the region in general) is rich in architectural works of outstanding beauty, offering its visitors impressive images that embellish the framework of the city despite its much diffused areas of industrial productivity.
Particularly interesting are the Veneto villas scattered in the provincial region dating back to the Venetian Republic era, among which La Rotonda, Palladio's magnificent work, distinguishes itself and fits in the environmental surroundings with its original and marvelous structure. Some remarkable monuments worth visiting in the city centre are: the San Lorenzo and the Santa Corona Churches (dating back to the 13th Century) and the works of Andrea Palladio such as the Teatro Olimpico and the Basilica Palladiana, a work of extraordinary beauty and symbol of the city. Vicenza is also a prominent trade fair hub with various engagements throughout the year, in particular the international gold displays for the market participants: Vicenzaoro 1 in January, Vicenzaoro 2 in June, Orogemma in September, the international Salone dell'orologio in September. The following are public trade fairs: Spaziocasa, Salone del mobile, Vicenza numanistica, Salone del vino Novello. |
